The Golden Rice Project
نویسندگان
چکیده
In the year 2000, more than 792 million people in 98 developing countries did not get enough food to lead a normal, healthy and active life, as estimated by FAO. More than 10 million children die of malnutrition every year, unnecessarily, and 90 percent of the fatalities are concentrated in only 42 developing countries. A vast majority of these deaths is linked to micronutrient deficiencies. The deficiencies with the highest impact on morbidity and mortality are in iron, zinc, iodine and vitamin A.

The ‘Golden Rice’ - An Exercise in How Not to Do Science
The scientific/social rationalization for the project exposes a reductionist self-serving scientific paradigm that fails to see the world beyond its own narrow confines. The ‘golden rice’ is a useless application. Some 70 patents have already been filed on the GM genes and constructs used in making the ‘golden rice’. It is a drain on public resources and a major obstruction to the implementatio...
متن کاملGolden Rice is an effective source of vitamin A.
BACKGROUND Genetically engineered "Golden Rice" contains up to 35 microg beta-carotene per gram of rice. It is important to determine the vitamin A equivalency of Golden Rice beta-carotene to project the potential effect of this biofortified grain in rice-consuming populations that commonly exhibit low vitamin A status. OBJECTIVE The objective was to determine the vitamin A value of intrinsic...
متن کامل9 th ICABR International Conference on Agricultural Biotechnology : Ten Years After Ravello ( Italy ) , July 6 to July 10 , 2005 Golden Rice – the Partitioning of Influence
In the past decade significant scientific progress has been made with the Golden Rice project. Significant increases in carotenoid have been achieved. Micronutrient malnutrition has been recognised as a major factor in total world malnutrition. What could be responsible for the continuing slow progress of the project? The answer may be related to the confluence of three influences on world soci...
متن کاملGolden Rice--five years on the road--five years to go?
Provitamin A accumulates in the grain of Golden Rice as a result of genetic transformation. In developing countries, where vitamin A deficiency prevails, grain from Golden Rice is expected to provide this important micronutrient sustainably through agriculture. Since its original production, the prototype Golden Rice has undergone intense research to increase the provitamin A content, to establ...
متن کاملGolden Rice
Golden Rice was engineered from normal rice by Ingo Potrykus and Peter Beyer in the 1990s to help improve human health. Golden Rice has an engineered multi-gene biochemical pathway in its genome [5]. This pathway produces beta-carotene, a molecule that becomes vitamin A when metabolized by humans [6]. Ingo Potrykus worked at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich, Switzerland, and ...
متن کاملDisembedding grain: Golden Rice, the Green Revolution, and heirloom seeds in the Philippines
‘Golden Rice’’ has played a key role in arguments over genetically modified (GM) crops for many years. It is routinely depicted as a generic GM vitamin tablet in a generic plant bound for the global South. But the release of Golden Rice is on the horizon only in the Philippines, a country with a storied history and complicated present, and contested future for rice production and consumption. T...
